"An NRI or person of Indian origin (PIO), as defined under FEMA, are eligible to acquire by way of purchase, any immovable property in India other than agricultural land/plantation property or a farmhouse. This is under general permission that has been given by the government of India.

How many residential properties can an NRI buy in India?

Yes, a non-resident Indian can buy either a residential property or a commercial property in India. Further, there is no limit on the number or residential or commercial properties that an NRI can purchase in India. Exception: An NRI however cannot buy agricultural land plantation land or a farm house in India.
